Nutrition

Getting adquate nutrition is an important part of cancer treatment. Eating the right kinds of foods before, during, and after treatment can help one feel better, stay stronger, maximize the benefits of treatment, and decrease the risk of infection.

The basis for a healthy diet during all phases of the cancer experience are these:

  • Eat five or more servings of a variety of vegetables and fruits everyday.
  • Choose whole grains in preference to processed or refined grains and sugars.
  • Limit consumption of red meats, especially those high in fat and those processed.
  • Choose foods that help you maintain a healthful weight.

No one can predict exactly how cancer treatment will affect different people and there are many factors involved. For many individuals, however, some side effects of cancer and its treatment make it difficult to eat well.
